Your experiences when you ask for help with tinnitus

Hi

Is it the case that people who have tinnitus can go to their GP and find lots of useful information about tinnitus and the help there is locally? Or is it just the opposite? What sort of information do you think would be helpful for GPs to have to be able to point people in the right direction?

What have your experiences been when you visited your GP? And what have your experiences been when/if you went to an ENT or Audiology Department or in the UK a Hearing Therapy department?

Have you found them helpful or otherwise? If otherwise, how do you think things could be improved in terms of access and information? If you found them helpful, how did they help you?

It will be really interesting to hear from you if you have an opinion about any of the above, and any ideas that might make useful information about tinnitus and how to "manage it", "cope with it" or just understand it more readily available locally.

The Tinnitus E-Programme was set up because of what appeared to be a dearth of locally accessible help - and I soon discovered this to be the case not only in England and the Home Countries but worldwide. Did you know that the E-Programme is being used by individuals from across the world - it has spread from here in Lancashire, England to Australia, New Zealand, America, India..... and many more countries.

We look forward to reading your stories

Best wishes

  1. This nightmare began just 5 weeks ago.my GP was very kind and prescribed meds to calm me and sent me to ent. There I was told by a very young doctor that I would just have to get used to it and that I was going deaf.Despite the fact I told him my hearing had been perfect before the tinnitus appeared.I was offered no support.Enquiries have shown that there is no support of any kind where I live. That is in Lisburn N.Ireland.I have since been referred to the Royal Victoria Hospital in Belfast but the waiting list is very long.I am so lonely and desperate.I feel like I am going mad.
The only help I have had is from a very kind lady who emails me.Without her I dont know where I would be today.I just found this address and I am not very good on computer so its taken me a while to figure it all out.
While my own doctor is kind and caring ,he has no idea of the impact this condition has on its victims.
As for the young doctor I saw in ENT he was totally uninformed. He was very patronising and seemed to think tinnitus was a minor inconvenience.
I have never had to resort to tranqillizers, sleeping tablets etc in my life before.I suppose I have been very blessed but already I cant cope without them and I am very worried about this.
I would try anything to get some relief and peace. Yours hopefully rosie

  2. Hi Rosie

Just a quick reply here as you have joined the E-Programme now as well as the Support Forum, through which I'm sure you will find some help.

Unfortunately, your story is more the norm than the exception from what I hear from many different sources. That was my reason for posting this particular message on the blog. I'm surprised more people haven't commented, but maybe it's because the blog is still so new and not many people access it at the moment.

    Best wishes

    Debbie
